Window Replacement Checklist
1. Preparation
- Measure existing window frame (height, width, depth)
- Gather tools: drill, pry bar, utility knife, caulk gun, shims, flashing tape, spray foam, silicone caulk
- Lay down drop cloths and wear safety gear
2. Remove Old Window
- Remove interior trim or stops with pry bar/knife
- Cut through caulk or paint sealing window
- Unscrew or pry out old window carefully
- Clean opening of debris, nails, and old caulk
3. Prepare Opening
- Inspect for rot or damage; repair as needed
- Apply flashing tape around sill and sides
- Dry-fit new window to confirm alignment
4. Install New Window
- Insert window into opening from outside
- Use shims to level and square window
- Secure with screws/nails at manufacturer’s points
- Test operation (open/close smoothly)
5. Seal & Insulate
- Apply low-expansion spray foam insulation around frame gaps
- Caulk exterior edges with silicone caulk
- Add backer rod/weatherstripping if needed
6. Finish Interior
- Replace or install trim around window
- Fill nail holes with wood filler and paint
- Clean glass and test functionality
Tips:
- Always check manufacturer’s instructions for specific installation details.
- Have a helper for lifting heavy windows.
- Waterproofing is critical—take extra care with flashing and caulk.
Risks:
- Poor sealing can cause leaks and rot.
- Incorrect leveling may prevent window from opening/closing properly.
