Light Fixture Installation Checklist

Preparation

  • Turn off power at the breaker.
  • Confirm no electricity with a voltage tester.
  • Gather tools: screwdriver, wire stripper, voltage tester, ladder.
  • Check fixture wattage rating against circuit capacity.

Wiring Basics

  • Identify wires:
  • Black = Hot (from switch)
  • White = Neutral (return path)
  • Green/Bare = Ground (safety)
  • Strip ~½ inch insulation from wires.
  • Twist fixture wires to house wires of same color.
  • Secure with wire nuts and gently tug to confirm tightness.
  • Connect ground wire to box ground screw or house ground.

Safety Tips

  • Never rely only on wall switch—always shut off breaker.
  • Inspect wires for damage before connecting.
  • Use proper electrical box rated for fixture weight.
  • Avoid loose wire nuts to prevent arcing.
  • Do not exceed fixture’s bulb wattage rating.

Installation Steps

  • Remove old fixture and inspect box/wires.
  • Attach mounting bracket securely to electrical box.
  • Connect wires (black-hot, white-neutral, green/bare-ground).
  • Secure connections with wire nuts.
  • Mount fixture to bracket.
  • Restore power at breaker.
  • Test fixture.
