Tools List for Replacing a Garage Door Opener:
Flathead screwdriver
Open ended adjustable wrench
Screw gun

Shopping List:
Smart garage door opener and accessories
Plastic conduit

Steps:
1. Turn the power off to the garage at the circuit panel.
2. Unplug the existing garage door opener. Loosen the brackets securing it to the ceiling and gently lower it down.
3. Use the open ended adjustable wrench to loosen the bracket and remove the bracket on the door and the bracket above the door.
4. Install the bracket that comes with the garage door opener over the garage door using the screw gun.
5. Slide the track into the bracket and secure with the wrench.
6. Screw the new motor into the existing brackets in the ceiling using the wrench.
7. Connect the lifting arm from the door to the track.
8. Wire the keypad into the wall on the inside of the garage.
9. Run the wire through a conduit and connect it to the garage door opener motor.
10. On the outside of the garage, mount the wireless keypad using the screw gun.
11. Mount the electric eyes about 6” from the floor on the inside of the garage.
12. Plug the motor into an outlet and turn the power back on.

Scott installed the Ryobi Ultra-Quiet Garage Door Opener (https://www.ryobitools.com). In the workshop, he showed some optional accessories including a fan, speaker, and extension cord that can all dock into the opener. Both the motor and accessories can be found at home centers.

Everything else Scott used to install the garage door opener, including the pliers and the drill, are available at home centers.

Automatic garage door openers are a huge convenience, but they do require proper maintenance to keep working properly and safely.

Most modern garage door opener systems are broken down into a few major components:
The Door Opener - the box that houses the mechanical engine that opens and closes the garage door
Emergency Release - in case the opener doesn’t function, this will allow you to release the door assembly for free, manual movement
Springs - torsion springs help the opener lift and lower the garage door itself
Tube - this is the shaft that houses the springs
Drums - pulley wheels at the end of the tube shaft
Cables - these connect the opener mechanism with garage door
Tracks and Rollers - these provide a pathway for the door to travel in
Brackets and Hinges - all of the separate components need to be held in place
Weather Seals - found on the sides and bottom of the garage door to keep a tight seal

In this video, we’ll show you how a proper tune up of these components can keep your system in tip-top shape.

Here’s a handy list that outlines the steps you’ll need to take when adjusting a garage door opener:
1. Disengage the emergency release and check to see if the door slides up and down smoothly
2. Check to see if the springs are balanced properly
3. If the springs are balanced properly and you’re still having issues, adjust the screws on the side or back of the opener to tweak the parameters that tell control how the door opens or closes

As you can see, with some simple testing, some muscle and a screwdriver, the ability to keep your garage door opener running properly is within reach.
