ALWAYS DO THIS...Before You Stain a New Deck/Fence! ("Soft Wash" New Wood + Lumber BEFORE STAINING!)

Staining a new deck, fence, or other exterior structure is always a good idea. But many people rush straight into the staining process without taking the proper steps before hand. This short video from The Honest Carpenter and Oak City Coatings will show you how to prep a new deck/fence with a "soft wash" process!

Adding stain and sealant to a new fence or deck helps extend the life of the outdoor structure by protecting it from cold/wet weather and harmful UV rays.

But before you stain, you should subject the fence or deck to a "soft wash." This is when you scour and clean the fence with a light chemical bath.

Nick uses Sherwin Williams Superdeck Revive. (This liquid cleaner contains oxalic acid.)
https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/products/superdeck-revive-deck-and-siding-brightener

Revive cleans off stains, mold and other pollutants. It also scours off "mill glaze," which is caused by hot saw blades crystallizing resins and liquids in certain types of wood.

To soft wash a fence or deck, just rinse it down first to flush off dust and some grime. Then, lightly coat the fence with Revive, or some similar product.

Nick uses a pressure washer to apply about 1 gallon of Revive to 100' linear fenceline.

Let the Revive sit for 15 MINUTES!

Flush the liquid cleanser off the surface of the new lumber with fresh water. This will leave your fence/deck looking brighter and cleaner. It'll also prepare the fence/deck to receive stain more evenly!

Wobbly porch railings can pose a serious safety risk. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you how to firm up wobbly deck railings!

Many wobbly porch railings are a result of poor post connections. These days, code requires that posts sit INSIDE the rim joist, and be secured through the rim joist with carriage bolts. But, numerous older railings are notched to the OUTSIDE of the rim joist (like the ones in this video).

These wobbly railings can be firmed up and made more secure by simply adding some additional hardware--specifically 1/2" lag screws with washers.

Here's the link for determining pilot hole size for various lag sizes:
http://www.trianglefastener.com/ckfinder/userfiles/files/Technical%20data/Lag_Screw_Hole_Size.pdf

Tools:
Drill
Drill Bits
1/2" Ratchet
Socket Set
Spade / Paddle Bits

Materials:
1/2" Lags (w/ Washers)

How-To Fix Wobbly Deck Railings:
1) If your posts lack strong lags, plan to add at least one. Preferably, two lags will exist in each post leg: one high, one low. Lags should be offset slightly from one another vertically to avoid stressing lumber.
2) Tighten any existing lags with a ratchet set.
3) Pre-drill pilot holes in deck posts using a 15/64" bit (I used a 1/4" bit here for convenience.) Drill bit should punch through post leg and two layers of rim joist.
4) Set a 1/2" lag with washer on in pilot hole. Tap in with a hammer to get first threads set.
5) Use ratchet to turn the lag all the way into lumber until washer gently bites into wobbly railing.
6) For diagonal corner posts, use a pilot hole and paddle bit to create a flat space for washer to sit.
7) Drive lag into pilot hole with ratchet set.

If you do this to all your porch posts, your railings will be considerably less wobbly! They'll also give you better assurance that no one will break a post while leaning against or sitting on the railing.

How to Clean and Restain a Deck | This Old House

This Old House general contractor Tom Silva breathes new life into a weather-beaten wood deck. (See below for a shopping list and tools.)

Tom helps a homeowner clean his dirty, weather-beaten mahogany deck and prepare it for staining. First, Tom sprayed regular water over the entire deck so that detergent wouldn't get absorbed into the wood. Next, using a garden-type pump sprayer, Tom sprayed a biodegradable detergent and water mixture onto the deck, scrubbed it with a stiff brush, and rinsed it with a garden hose. With the entire deck cleaned, Tom applied a borate to prevent any future growth of mildew. Next, Tom left the homeowner to apply a mixture of stain and polyurethane to add color and protect the deck against the weather. Later, up in the loft, Tom showed Kevin some other options for staining and sealing a wooden deck.

Shopping List:
biodegradable wood cleaner [https://amzn.to/2LJhfmZ], used to clean the wood surfaces
borate [https://amzn.to/32AKeR2], used to kill algae on the deck
oil-based deck stain [https://amzn.to/34B7gsQ], for protecting and tinting the deck
oil-based exterior-grade varnish [https://amzn.to/2NT72av], mixed with the stain for extra weather protection
five-gallon bucket [https://amzn.to/2A7MOSo], for mixing the borate solution
2-inch-wide painter's tape [https://amzn.to/2LIW2tt, used to mask off areas you don't want to stain

Tools:
backpack pump sprayer [https://amzn.to/2N8rAMr], for spraying on deck cleaner
long-handled, stiff-bristle scrub brush [https://amzn.to/2LseaJn], for scrubbing the deck clean
long-handled sponge applicator [https://amzn.to/2N8oEPQ], used to apply stain to the deck
cordless drill [https://amzn.to/2LrY6Y6] with paint-mixing paddle [https://amzn.to/304Nnqr], for mixing the borate solution

Tom used an environmentally-friendly deck detergent and borate solution to clean and protect the deck against mildew. Both were manufactured by Bora-Care [https://nisuscorp.com/].
