How to Patch a Chimney - EASY!

If you're having issues with your chimney and need to patch it yourself, this is how you do it! This vinyl concrete is extremely easy to use and is designed not to crack. Quikretes manufacturing instructions outline exactly how to use this product and is a big part of what my video goes off of.

This specific chimney is made out of cinder blocks and was cased with some sort of concrete. There have been multiple patch jobs on this it appears as I can see some fiberglass strands in the surface concrete here. This same type of patch that I'm using will work with any type of brick and concrete chimney.

The steps are as follows:
1) remove any loose pieces
2) use a wire brush to further remove debris and moss
3) use a soft brush to clear the dust and dirt
4) mix the mortar
5) spray water in areas you are about to apply vinyl concrete to
6) apply concrete and let sit for 15-30 minutes
7) use a float to smooth out the concrete
6) keep the concrete wet for a few hours if possible to prevent cracking and improve bonding.

If you have any questions or if you're a professional mason, drop down a comment below and either I'll help you out, or you can help me and the other viewers out.

Save Thousands With This DIY Chimney Stack Repair

????CHECK OUT OUR OTHER GUIDES
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLvRh7uimDQfddLu9kc-cCSBds9xNeoUiU

Summary

???? Preparation & Assessment: Roger inspects the chimney stack and explains the damage. The cement pointing had failed due to frost, leading to loose mortar and bricks.

???? Chasing Out Mortar: The old mortar is removed using a grinder and chisel, ensuring a clean depth of 20-25mm for reporting.

???? Lime vs. Cement: The issue with cement pointing is that it traps moisture, damaging the structure. Lime mortar (NHL 5) is selected for flexibility and durability.

???? Brick Replacement & Color Matching: New imperial-size bricks are chosen to match the existing structure for an aesthetically seamless repair.

???? Pot Reinstallation & Flaunching: The old flaunching is removed, and the pots are checked for cracks. They are reset securely using slates for added support.

???? Structural Tying: To correct the chimney’s outward lean (15mm deviation), helical ties are installed into the brickwork to reinforce stability.

???? Resin Bonding: The helical ties are embedded in resin and concealed under the pointing to blend with the original chimney.

???? Final Coating: A storm dry coating is applied to keep moisture out while allowing the chimney to breathe, preserving its longevity.

Insights Based on Numbers

???? 20-25mm Depth: The mortar was carefully chiselled out to this depth, ensuring a solid repointing foundation.

???? 15mm Lean: The chimney had shifted over time, necessitating structural reinforcement.

???? Every Fourth Course: Helical ties were installed at every fourth brick course to secure the structure effectively.
